a-MAIZE-ing Grace!

Step-by-Step Instructions

On this page you can download everything you need to help your congregation participate in this a-MAIZE-ing ministry or if you are unable to print your own cards and make your own ornament tokens you can order them by contacting Pastor Dave Carver.

  1. Download and print the full color brochure in pdf format to hand out to people to provide details of this ministry.
  2. To make the ornament tokens, determine if you want to use the fabric sheets or the iron-on transfer paper (both of which are designed to work with your home computer printer). Order the appropriate materials online or purchase them at your local office supply store.
  3. Download the appropriate image to print on the fabric sheets or the iron-on transfer paper (reverse image). Print the appropriate image on the appropriate material and sew together each ornament token.
  4. Download and print the personalized cards. When someone donates money to buy a bag of maize, have them sign a card and return it to us with the donation. We will forward the personalized card to Malawi where our partners will distribute it along with the bag of maize.
  5. Download the alternate image to make smaller tokens (4.25" x 2.25" before sewing) that can be filled with corn without being too heavy as a Christmas tree ornament.

    Some Tips:
    • You can print with a home printer onto a tightly woven fabric, like muslin (cotton) or other plain fabric (cotton or poly-cotton blend) as an alternative to buying special fabric sheets.
    • Prepare the fabric by cutting it to 9" x 12" and ironing it right side up onto freezer paper. The waxy side of the freezer paper melts just enough to adhere to the back side of the fabric. Once the fabric and paper are adhered, trim the sheet exactly and cleanly to 8.5" x 11".
    • Feed the prepared fabric sheet through your printer. Set the printer preference to photo or best photo, in order to deliver more ink than the text only setting. Select the paper type as matte.
    • One rule of production is to "keep it as large as possible as long as possible". In this case, you will want to sew the full sheet (after removing the paper backing) to the backing fabric along all the light gray seamlines except the left and right vertical margins.
    • Cut the individual tokens apart from the sheet, fill with corn and sew that last seam. As you sew the last seam shut, include a loop of ribbon in the corner to use as an ornament hanger.

Anyone can make these ornament tokens and print these materials. The goal is to get as much assistance to Malawi before Easter 2013. Churches can sell the tokens at their bazaar or holiday markets and return the funds for famine relief. Youth Groups may find that this is a great way to raise money for a service project, or a “planned famine“ to raise awareness for hunger issues. Sunday Schools or Deacons might find this to be a useful tool to engage people in mission awareness and relief. Spread the word to all your family and friends.

Make checks payable to “Pittsburgh Presbytery“ and write “Malawi Famine Relief“ in the memo line. Please send all contributions and signed, personalized cards to:
