Cyclone Idai

How we can help save lives in Malawi, following the devesation caused by this tropical storm

Cyclone Idai is one of the worst storms ever to afflict the continent of Africa and the southern hemisphere overall. Idai caused great devastation in southern Africa to the countries of Mozambique, Zimbabwe and our beloved country of Malawi. This storm battered southern Malawi March 5-7 and has greatly impacted several of our partnership church communities in the Blantyre Synod region.

High winds and torrential rains dumped as much as 16 inches of rain and caused massive destruction and flooding. Roads and bridges have been washed out. Houses, crops and livestock have been lost. This disaster displaced over 16,000 households and claimed the lives of 56 people to date in southern Malawi. The President of the Republic of Malawi, Peter Mutharika, has declared a National Disaster.

The displaced people in Malawi are in urgent need of clean water, food, medicine, clothing, blankets, tents, kitchen utensils, and mosquito nets. Beyond these urgent needs, there are additional challenges that impact their lives: the vulnerability of displaced children, women, elderly, sick and disabled; food security for the 2018/2019 growing season; cholera and other communicable diseases; malaria prevention and disturbance of economic empowerment programs.

How can you help? Please join us in praying for all the people, churches and communities that have been affected in southern Malawi. Pray for their protection and welfare of the displaced people. Pray that their basic life needs will be met. Pray that their homes will be rebuilt and their crops will be replanted. Pray for the restoration of the country’s infrastructure.

And if your heart aches for the people of southern Malawi and the situation in which they find themselves, then let us remember the words from Jesus’ brother James, as he challenged us to put our faith into action, as found in James 2:14-17. Let us share a portion of our abundant blessings with those who are desperate for basic needs for their own survival.

The International Partnership Ministry Team of Pittsburgh Presbytery is accepting donations for our partners in the Blantyre Synod to be used for the victims of Cyclone Idai. If you feel led to provide support, please send your check made payable to "Pittsburgh Presbytery," C/O Cindy Miller, 901 Allegheny Avenue, Pittsburgh, PA 15233 with "Malawi Flood Relief" indicated on the memo line. Thank you!
